Quick Sketches
The following are some of the quick sketches I've been working on. The quick sketch is generally the initial study of any piece of art. It's meant to capture the gesture of the subject or composition with long flowing lines and large representative shapes. It's the artistic input that goes into a painting before any rendering or detailed drawing happens. I hope you enjoy them.

New Work
The next group of 6 portrait sketches were completed in the last couple of months. Sorry about the long dry spell. I've been working on my drawing skills and plan to move into painting in the next month or so. I've also been working hard on quick sketch and will try to post some examples of my work in the next few days. As always, please feel free to comment; I welcome your views.

New Update
The next four entries were completed during the last month. They are all drawings, and will be for the foreseeable future as I hone my skills with Van Saro.
Master's Copy: Malcom Liepke's "Touseld Hair"
12"X19"
What better way to learn than to copy the masters? Malcolm Lipeke is one of my favorites.

A New Path
I have begun what I hope will be a path to more skillful and intuitive artwork. I am studying under the tutelage of Van Saro (www.vansaro.com), an outstanding young artist who teaches the classical method of drawing and painting. It may mean that the number of postings will decrease as I strive to make my work more accurate, but I hope that the level of execution will be obvious when a piece is posted. My goal is to train my eye and hand to be as accurate as possible, and then to push that knowledge into my intuition and paint the things I see when I close my eyes at night: the artwork from my heart. Wish me luck and send me good energy! -Lin

Sculpture Open House
The open house at Art Center on Monday evening (4-14-08) was a success. The work was inspired and the attendees were fun and interesting. Art Center will hopefully include some of the sculpture photos in their next class description in the Fall. I showed several pieces including my final project shown in this post:

Dad 2
Pass #2: Dad is an avid fisherman, and loves the outdoors. As I stared at the first pass, I thought, he would rather be outdoors, by a lake, in the fresh air. The background is a subconscious memory of the places we used to fish when I was a child. ...not that I ever liked to fish, but I loved being with my family out there in the sunshine. I feel like the next pass needs to be very deliberate and judicious.
