2009 has been an incredible year of growth for me. I've studied under Van Saro now for more than a year and the progress shows in my work: thank you, Van. I also have a beautiful new studio near my home which I share with my friend and colleague, Heidi Floren.

I believe 2010 is going to be a year of new mastery and also a year in to get my new work out to the public by entering more group art shows. I will keep you posted on dates and times. Thank you all for your support this year and I hope that your new year is full of warmth, laughter and love.

Thanks to all of you who have been clamoring for new postings this year. I really appreciate your interest! I've been very focused on drawing for many months now, and I've finally made the plunge back into oils. Betty Edwards ("Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain" and "Color") says that painting is inherently more difficult than drawing because it requires input from the left side of the brain to mix colors as well as the artistic right side of the brain for drawing. Therefore, the artist in constantly switching gears during a painting. This might explain why even the old masters, such as John Singer Sargent, were famous for requiring up to 60 sittings by their patrons for a single portrait. All this to say, I hope to see outrageous progress in my painting in 2009. I hope you enjoy the ride with me. Cheers! -Lin

A New Path

I have begun what I hope will be a path to more skillful and intuitive artwork. I am studying under the tutelage of Van Saro (www.vansaro.com), an outstanding young artist who teaches the classical method of drawing and painting. It may mean that the number of postings will decrease as I strive to make my work more accurate, but I hope that the level of execution will be obvious when a piece is posted. My goal is to train my eye and hand to be as accurate as possible, and then to push that knowledge into my intuition and paint the things I see when I close my eyes at night: the artwork from my heart. Pass #2: Dad is an avid fisherman, and loves the outdoors. As I stared at the first pass, I thought, he would rather be outdoors, by a lake, in the fresh air. The background is a subconscious memory of the places we used to fish when I was a child. ...not that I ever liked to fish, but I loved being with my family out there in the sunshine. I feel like the next pass needs to be very deliberate and judicious.

This is just a start...but I thought it might be fun to watch a progression, especially since this piece is taking its own unique path. I started with a "sight-size" sketch using pencil on the canvas, and followed that with a light oil wash just to tone the canvas. Stay tuned...

What am I doing sculpting? Trying to understand my painting better, or at least that's how I started. However, it turns out that I LOVE sculpting. It's addictive! Very tactile! I'm taking a figure sculpture class at the Art Center this semester from the very talented, Chris Slatoff. You can see one of his pieces at: http://saintfelicitas.org/Userdocs%20Church/Bulletin/FrontBulletin.pdf He's an excellent teacher and attracts a talented, close-knit group of students. I'll post more as we go. Each of the two sculptures posted below were accomplished with a live model over the course of ~15 hours.

This is a portrait of my good friend and colleague, Heidi Floren. She is an outstanding artist in her own right and one of the best people that I know. This is the first pass of a full-color portrait. I started with yellow ochre as my sketch color because of the brilliant light on her face, and the amazing golden color of her hair.

I don't think I'm done with this piece yet. Joseph Gatt is another one of my favorite models. In this pose, I love his expression. I'm not sure that the background supports that feeling yet. Judy Davis was working with me on this pose-creating an imposing sculptural bust. Joseph was in the "Mr. Clean" stance, but the discussion was deep. I caught the emotion in the face, but it needs more... When I paint without the model, I tend to talk to the subject of the painting: Joseph has more to say here.
